Black stars in the dark that shone so bright,
Pan continental sparks were reignited,
In a flood-lit calabash, man what a sight!
Eleven Ghanaians became Africa United.

For the global Diaspora of Africans whose numbers stretched to billions,
A short but welcome distraction from conflict and debt,
From the highest to the lowest, military to civilians,
The togetherness observed there we won’t soon forget.

Not a state of mass hysteria - it was collective sanity
In which differences were briefly cast aside by all
Instead connections re-kindled to the cradle of humanity
By a team in red and a Jabulani ball.

Its conclusion could been seen as a downright tragedy,
But something bigger than a penalty would be missed
If the result on the pitch which was an obvious travesty,
Obscured the euphoric unity by all witnessed.

It was here, we felt it, in spite of the result,
This game of beauty reminded us that whilst life is still unfair,
As we journey through it from childhood to adult,
It’s less about the winning than the experience we share

In a flood-lit calabash, man what a sight!

I too was at the Cote D'Ivoir Vs Brazil match.

I think some people left early but that was their look out we hung around a while before heading out on the tail of the crowds.

I have to say we enjoyed our half time Ice Creams - coming from the UK it wasn't like it was cold and they were very reasonably priced!!!

I have a great shot of the first goal, I was sitting up in the gods directly in line with the goal facing the tunnel.

Park and ride was great except for a massive problem with the dust while waiting for the bus back to Gold Reef City.

Steve,
Found your book in a bookshop randomly while looking for something to keep me occupied in the lead up to june 11. Now, half way into the world cup, I have finally finished it and I enjoyed it very much. It was interesting throughout but the most compelling and inspirational bit for me was about the Liberian amputee team. I would love to learn more about them, is there any where else that you could suggest for me to find out more?

Cheers,
Aubrey

PS. Good luck on Sunday.
