“We need nets”

It took me a while to understand this advert. Becks strikes a free kick which hits a man on the head. And this is a metaphor for malaria? Then I realised the net had suddenly disappeared. Ah, so if we don’t have goal nets then unsuspecting people will get hit by footballs. Which is, of [...]

The Roundup

Best of African Club Football Let’s start with the African Champions League. Two big shocks in the first leg of the second round. The organisers are hoping to do something similar during the World Cup in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and Ghana. The slideshow is by Graham Holliday, founder of the Rwandan news website, Kigali Wire.

Earthquakes and the power of football

In the wake of Saturday’s devastating earthquake in Chile the BBC’s Tim Vickery recalls how the country’s plans to host the World Cup in 1962 were threatened by a similar tragedy two years earlier: “The idea that theĀ 1962 World Cup could in some way ‘compensate’ for the earthquake is clearly foolish and lacking in all [...]

Losing

I’ve been fortunate enough to see my team, Aston Villa, play at Wembley three times. In 1994 we won the Legaue Cup, beating Manchester United 3-1, and two years later we beat Leeds 3-0 to win the same trophy again. They were great, unforgettable days. (The less said about the third occasion, a 1-0 defeat [...]
